Free Keyboard and Piano Lessons Part 4

Half and Whole Notes

Before we continue on with the exercises, let's take a look at notes and their relative values. You are already familiar with quarter notes, having played them in the previous exercises. As you know, a quarter note equals one beat. You also know that four quarter notes equal four beats. 

You are also familiar with the quarter rest, which  equals two beat of silence. A half note looks like a white quarter note and equals two beats of sound.

The sound of a half note is sustained, or held, for two beats. 

 

Whole notes look like half notes without stems.

They are held for a full four beats. Whole rests look like upside-down half rests and receive four counts of silence.
