On the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Edward Van Halen replied to  the question What is it like to be the greatest guitarist on Earth? Go ask Steve Lukather.

As a child he learned to play the guitar, piano. He began after two years of guitar studies at Jimmy Wyble quickly to establish himself in the session scene of the studios in LA. As a nearly 20-year-old, he and his high school friends, the band Toto, became famous for their albums, especially through his solos. His worldwide fame rests also on its long session - working as a guitarist for many other renowned artists. Lukather played on more than 1000 shots for musicians such as Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, The Tubes, Joe Cocker, Boz Scaggs, Brothers Johnson, and Chicago

For his instrumental album No Substitutions in rock / jazz / fusion style, which he recorded in Japan with Larry Carlton, he received the 2002 Grammy.

Overall, Lukather is mentioned as a staff of over 500 music albums, he released 17 albums with Toto, five with Los Lobotomys and six in his solo projects.

Lukather plays since 1994, his own Musicman guitar model named Luke. Initially with a Floyd Rose tremolo, and later with the Musicman Vintage tremolo with locking tuners. The electro-acoustic guitar of his choice is an Ovation Adamas. Lukather runs a three-channel amp setup, that is in the middle of the dry signal of his amp (no effects), left and right (stereo) the admixed effects. The three channels each running through a 2x12 "Custom Audio Electronics' speaker. His is a Custom Audio Electronics preamp amplifier (CAE 3 +) in connection with a VHT Classic power amp.
